Toyota To Roll Out Level 4 Self-Driving Cars For 2020 Olympics In Tokyo

All eyes will be on Tokyo in 2020 as Toyota plans to unveil their fleet of autonomous vehicles specifically designed for transportation around the event. It will utilize the previously seen e-Palette design which Toyota also plans to use for food and package delivery.

The various 1-5 scale of self-driving cars denotes the amount of driver interaction necessary to operate the vehicle. At level 4 the car can operate without human input or oversight, but only under select conditions defined by factors such as road type or geographic area.

In this case the geographic area has been determined as the Tokyo Water Front City and Haneda areas. The e-Palettes will also be used to transport athletes around the Athlete's Village.

Toyota will also present the Concept-i, a car with artificial intelligence that can recognize driver's emotions and preferences as  well as make conversation with them.

Previously Toyota has been slow to produce and unveil their self-driving technologies, opting for thorough testing and cautious optimism with their designs. It's obvious from what we've been seeing lately from them that they're gaining on their competition and are ready to stake a claim within the world of autonomous vehicles.
