The Dangers of Blind Spots and How to Avoid Them

You’re cruising down the road at 60 mph. You're ready to change lanes when suddenly a vehicle comes out of nowhere. What happened? It’s that dreaded blind spot.

Blind spots are areas of the road on either side of your car that are partially or completely obstructed while you’re driving unless you turn your head. The problem is that in these blind spots, a vehicle, motorcycle, bike or pedestrian can be hidden from sight. The result is often a collision. Each year, there are approximately 840,000 blind spot-related accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Another consequence is the number of fatalities that can occur when a person, often a child, is hidden in the blind spot. The website kidsandcars.org reports that at least 50 children across the country are backed over by a vehicle every week.

All drivers must deal with blind spots. The larger the vehicle, the larger the blind spot. However, the good news is that these issues can be avoided.

At Hendrick Collision Chevrolet Buick GMC Richmond, we like to stress automotive safety and help educate our customers and friends here in Richmond, VA. So, here is some solid information about how to safely handle the dreaded blind spot.

Here are 5 ways to minimize the risks:

1.)      Properly adjust your rearview and side mirrors. After you’re seated and buckled up, make sure you can see a full view out of your back window from your rearview mirror. Your side mirrors should be turned so that you can see the side of your car with a glance.

2.)      Pay close attention to traffic patterns. Keep your eyes constantly moving and scan the roads ahead and to the side.

3.)      Always check your blind spots before turning, passing or changing lanes. Once you’ve made sure the road is clear ahead, look over your shoulder just enough to quickly see the view behind. Be extra careful when backing up.

4.)      Keep a clear view while driving. Do not add anything on your windows, including coatings that might block your view.

5.)      Avoid other vehicle’s blind spots, especially large trucks. A good rule of thumb is to remember that if you can’t see a driver through their mirrors, they can’t see you.

Technological advances are currently being introduced to help reduce blinds spots. Blind spot detection systems (BSMS) and rearview camera systems are available on many newer vehicles. Although they have been found to be effective, it’s still important to always be aware of your surroundings.

When you’re ready to change lanes or turn, always proceed with caution!
