Hertz Partners With Aptiv For Autonomous Fleet In Las Vegas
Car rental giant Hertz recently announced their partnership with tech company Aptiv to provide a fleet of autonomous vehicles in the city where they may be the most needed: Las Vegas. They will take a tiered approach to the release of the fleet, which would be smart considering the trepidation caused by the recent accident in which a self-driving Uber struck and killed a pedestrian.
Anyone who has ever taken a taxi in Las Vegas will surely view this as a positive, though. There are plenty of things that make the experience unpleasant. The constant badgering to go to locations the driver is being paid to persuade you into is a big one. Talking to driver is often unpleasant for many who are less than social. Also, an autonomous vehicle will never take a circuitous route to overcharge you. This program will also certainly take many inebriated drivers off the road as well!
Several other companies are planning on offering autonomous vehicles for transport, including another company that has also partnered with Aptiv: Lyft. It's only natural that Uber's major competitor would also throw their hat into the ring. This comes on the heels of the news that Walmart has been planning a partnership with several other retailers and service providers to give their customers an easy way to get to and from their businesses. At this rate, there is no stopping the rise of the age of self-driving cars. Hopefully there will be a sufficient amount of oversight and regulation to ensure the requisite amount of safety protocols.
