NHTSA Data Shows Traffic Fatalities Increase in 2015
Preliminary data announced recently by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration report a 7.7 percent increase in motor vehicle traffic deaths in 2015. This is an estimated 35,200 of people who died in 2015, up from the 32,675 reported fatalities in 2014. The NHTSA is perplexed by the surprising increase in road deaths and they are now trying to decipher these numbers and devise solutions to alleviate this serious situation.
Here at Poway Valley Collision, we read tragic news in the paper here in Poway, CA, and it always frustrates us, too—because we fix cars after accidents, but we don't ever want to hear about fatal collisions. And that's why we are sharing this news with you, in the hopes that people will drive a little more safely and responsibly all over the country.
Currently, the NHTSA is analyzing this recent data to conclude what factors contributed to the increase in fatalities and at the same time, they are also testing new safety accident avoidance technologies and new ways to develop better driver behavior, as they work in conjunction with the entire road safety community to make additional changes.
Until the NHTSA is able to study the data more carefully, they won't be certain, but it does appear as though 9 out of 10 regions within the U.S. had more traffic fatalities in 2015. The most notable increases came for pedestrians and bicyclists, which were both significant.
The NHTSA is sponsoring ongoing events called "summits" so that the agency can get feedback from the public to develop new tools that can improve behavior while driving. These include intoxicated, impaired, distracted or drowsy driving; excessive speed; failure to use safety features such as seatbelts and child seats and a wide range of new initiatives to protect vulnerable drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) unveiled a pivotal safety agreement with car manufacturers requiring that 99 percent of new vehicles will feature automatic emergency braking standard by 2022. This safety technology could avert thousands of crashes annually. In addition, they are working to mandate vehicle-to-vehicle communications systems on all new automobiles—a technology that can surely help drivers to avoid roughly 70-80 percent of vehicle crashes involving unimpaired drivers. The DOT is also consulting with automotive researchers on various technologies that could prevent drunk driving, which is responsible for close to one-third of all highway deaths.
