Mercedes-Benz Launches the Croove
Depending on where you live--whether it's in Pomona, CA or anywhere else in the world--most of us either own or have access to a car. At Ben Clymers The Body Shop Pomona, we work on cars, but we also know that cars sit unused most of the time in our society. Think about all the time that vehicles sit around idly while we are working, sleeping or sitting inside our homes. For those who have opted out of owning a car, whether it’s for environmental or financial reasons, there is another alternative—car-sharing.
Car manufacturers are looking at different transportation methods to offer their customers. Car-sharing services such as Car2Go and ZipCar, are now available as an alternative to using traditional rental companies. They can save drivers time and money and are changing the way people get around town.
Those in Munich and Berlin, Germany, can now access a new car-sharing service, which was launched by Mercedes-Benz in December 2016. It is called Croove and brings together vehicle owners and rental customers. Daimler, the company that owns Mercedes-Benz, also owns and operates Car2Go.
Let’s say your car is in the shop or you are going on a business trip in Germany. You haven’t rented a vehicle yet and would like to find one that is well-looked-after and located nearby.
Those interested just need to download the Croove app or type in letscroove.com and you can easily find out which vehicles are available. In addition to Mercedes-Benz, there are cars from other manufacturers, such as Audi, BMW and Porsche. Car owners who list their vehicles need to ensure they are in good condition and aren’t older than 15 years.
Cars can be booked by the hour, day or week. Renters have the option of choosing the model and trim level they like best and then they can find out the price and time availability. There are also photos to view. The vehicles are fully insured and fuel costs are extra.
“Millions of cars are only used for a few hours a week – and we take care of the rest of the time,” said Daniel Rohrhirsch, the founder of Croove. The service was set up to be affordable and easy-to-use for both parties.
Croove is currently in the pilot phase. Once the app is tested, the company will decide whether it should be launched in other cities around Germany. A similar service was started in the UK called Turo, which focuses on rental fleets. Car Club is now available in Europe.
There are many benefits of car-sharing services: fewer cars on the road, no more maintenance costs and less parking hassles. If you find you’re without a vehicle and have somewhere to go, consider a car-sharing service. Like they say in Germany: Let’s Croove!
