How to Replace Your Computer Key and Fob

Replacing lost or broken car keys can be expensive these days. You can no longer get a cheap replacement key made at your local hardware store. Keys are high tech, and replacing them can cost hundreds of dollars. The majority of ignition keys have a transponder that communicates with cars electronically. They are designed to help prevent theft because the vehicle will not start if the key has not been programmed to match the car. In addition, keys come with a separate and integrated fob that feature buttons that lock and unlock the doors and trunk.

If you lose the key and fob, it will probably cost you over $300 to replace and program both at the dealership. The price can be more for higher end vehicles such as BMW's and Mercedes. You may be able to save money on a replacement key if you buy one online. In some cases the cost can be about half or less of what it would cost to replace your key and fob at a dealership. On the downside, it does take longer so if you cannot wait for a replacement this may not be a good option. Plus, you will have to hire a locksmith to cut the key and program the fob. If you are inclined to do so, you can save money by programming the key yourself. There are instructions on how to do so online, but availability it does depend on the make and model.

Another common problem that can occur with fobs is the battery dying. It can cause the buttons on the fob to stop working, but the key may still start the ignition. The first thing to attempt is to replace the battery inside the fob. They are affordable and are often available online or at electronic and drug stores. You can find the corresponding number on the underside of the battery. To replace the fob battery, start by prying open the key fob case. Often, there is a mechanical key inside the casing of the fob. Once the case has been removed, you should be able to locate the slot and open the fob's case and replace the battery.

If replacing the battery does not solve the issue, you may need to replace the fob's electronics. The dealer can do this for you for about $100. If you want to cut that cost in half, you can transfer your key's electronics to the original key online. The programming instructions are simple to follow and will save you money.
