Tesla Announces EV Pickup Truck

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced the company's latest creation: an electric pickup truck. The vehicle that will reportedly be on the market within 18 to 24 months, in additiona to an EV semi-truck. With more than eight new types of vehicles, Tesla is working hard to innovate the world of transportation one ingenious invention at a time.

At Huffines Collision Center - Plano, we hope to see some of these cutting-edge vehicles in Plano, TX soon.

After his initial announcement, Musk said that Tesla (TSLA)'s next generation Roadster will be a stylish convertible. Musk also stated that the final unveiling of the Model 3, its most reasonably-priced car, will be coming up sometime during the summer.

On top of all these great announcements, Tesla said it is also planning to unveil a semi-truck and a minibus by the end of 2017 and will then enter production within the next 5-6 years.

The Tesla Semi is designed for cargo transport, and was first revealed in Musk's second "master plan", released in late 2016. "We strongly believe that the Tesla Semi will deliver a major reduction in the cost of cargo transport, while increasing safety and making it really fun to operate," Musk wrote in his initial plan.

The timeline that Musk announced puts both new trucks out after it releases its much-anticipated Model 3 this summer. The Palo Alto based company has seta goal of making 5,000 vehicles weekly once the production on the Model 3 starts.

The Model 3 will mark a potential turning point for the electric carmaker's sales, as it is anticipated to fall into the $35,000 price range, with a range of 215 miles. Tesla reported that the sedan will likely be available for deliveries commencing in mid-2018 or later.

Tesla's timeline comes at an opportune moment, after optimism in the electric car manufacturer's future had allowed it to surpass Ford Motor Co. and General Motors in market capitalization.

Market numbers most certainly provide confidence in Tesla's immediate future, but it's the only statistic that stacks up to Ford and General Motors. Elon Musk's company sold jut a little more than 40,000 vehicles last year, while Ford sold one million of simply its F-Series and GM sold 574,676 Chevy Silverados.

Will Tesla challenge both Ford and GM for truck dominance? Only time will tell.
