Massive Date Breach Threatens Car Manufacturers

Massive Date Breach Threatens Car Manufacturers

In a report by the New York Times earlier this month, a major data breach exposed trade secrets for Toyota, Tesla, Ford, GM, and others. The breach was caused by faulty security protocols instituted by Level One Robotics.

The fault seems to lie in the transfer protocols and the permissions associated with them. UpGuard Cyber Risk, the company that identified the breach, claims that any entity on the rsync client (the file transfer protocol used by Level One) could access all files across the client regardless of individual permissions.

This has proven how security across large entities has to be looked at holistically, meaning every point in an ordered system must be inspected for its effects upon the whole. But how bad was the breach this time?

The total data at risk across all companies was about 157 gigabytes of data, which is nothing to sneeze at. Schematics, floor plans, and personal data for employees was all part of the breach. So were contracts and bank account details.

Perhaps most disquieting was the fact that the breach was identified by the security team on July first, but Level One didn't respond and close the breach until July 10th.
